Just had the nastiest dick of a man have a go at me for following our policy and I felt so threatened and upset and I've been close to crying for most of the end of my shift.

I'm not made to handle people like that. They make me feel even more worthless than I already am.

I want to take all of my Pregabalin right now and just forget I even exist. I wanted to try going without any but I'm not capable of calming myself down. I'm breathing as deep as I can and it's doing nothing.

I know not everyone in the world is nasty like that, but the people who are send me into such a panic and I'm a mess now and will be for the rest of the evening.

I'm sorry to hear about that experience. Many years ago, I worked at a restaurant and it was a living hell. Not only did I suck at dealing with customers, the owner (since it was a mom and pop restaurant) was mean as hell and more often than not, I'd just imagine wanting to die or do something really drastic. I worked there for just a bit more than 2 months and then quit. I too, am not fit for customer service jobs let alone having an abusive boss.

Ugh, I hate the public and dealing with customers. I used to have one and I always wanted to reach over the counter and choke them. And it's always these snappy ghetto ass chicks thinking they own you. Fuck customer service jobs, hope you can get out of that area.

I fucking hate this shit. I’ve had plenty of jobs like that where people take out their frustrations on employees who’s job it is to try and help them. Makes me realize people in general are pretty awful. They have no idea what the people working these jobs are struggling with in their personal lives and they’ll degrade them because they’ve spent a few dollars.

Not that any other job is much better. Bosses will always degrade workers because they have the power to take their source of income away. Coworkers are always trying to tear people apart as well so they look good in front of their boss.

Horrible sick shit. Fuck all of these people.

At my previous job which was customer service based I began with lots of "I apologise for that" kind of comments at angry or frustrated customers, over time that lessoned, especially the ones who return things they've clearly broken themselves...I know what you're trying to do, it ain't going to work on me. It didn't mean I was a complete asshole though, I just became more tough on things. For all I know that person who is mad could have just gone through a traumatic event.

People like that are cancer. They have no one and nothing meaningful around them and eventually they'll self destruct.

As long as you aren't like him and take it out on other people I believe you can get over it since you seem like a good person going through a hard time.

Hope you feel better.

I'm so sorry! I hate that they can inflict such violence, never mind having to take it! Life is cruel in that we feel pain deeper than pleasure so often, and in that job there are few good things to help. You know it intellectually, but you were not to blame for his entitlement and terrible socialisation. Unfortunately there are so many of them :(

Is anybody made for a customer service job? I don't mean this as in you might not suffer extra from the job, because that could totally be the case. I mean that the job exposes you to tons of abuse from both the public and your employers (and adds the stress of low wages). It exacerbates life's great asymmetry in every way. Pretty much everyone ends up feeling chewed up by these jobs—it doesn't reflect on you but rather the world

I think everyone in customer service is a hero for getting through it—I know you all are just trying to live, but it is people like you who make society functional. I wish you weren't in that situation at all though. People :/

If it makes you feel any better, my customer service "career" only lasted five minutes. I was in high school, working at Burger King, where I was one of the "cooks" in the back. One afternoon, we were short-staffed, so I was asked to take orders up front. The very first customer, an entitled Baby Boomer asshole, berated me for not giving him his order quick enough. He was a complete dick about it too. I was ready to hop over the counter and punch his fucking lights out, but I didn't unleash my aggression on that day. I ended up walking out of the job a few weeks later when two of my co-workers accused me of being lazy because I wasn't able to help them at a time when I was absolutely swamped. I shouted at them and challenged them to a fight because I was sick of their shit. One of them picked up a broom (a fucking broom... can you believe that?) and I told him that I'd shove it up his ass Jeffrey Dahmer style before cursing them out one last time and storming out of the restaurant. I lost a $2,000 BK college scholarship because of it and my parents were pissed!

Come work at a warehouse and construction lol. You'll feel just as tired and burnt out. That's why I got into a trade school so I didn't have to deal with the public but I realized it's all bullshit. Still have to deal with people and work long ass hours. There's no silver lining, it's all a lose-lose game.

I’ve learned that too. Customer service work is stressful and degrading but so is nearly every other job - especially if you have any anxiety or depression.

I can relate to that line so much! I am sorry that you had to experience that, and that it caused you to spiral for the rest of the evening, people don't realise or care what effect their nastiness can have on others, they think everyone will just 'take it on the chin' like I guess they would, they fail to understand that a lot of people take these things to heart and are very much affected by them.

Some people enjoy making others feel bad and it’s a perfect setup for them because the employee is forced to deal with it. “It’s their job”

I feel like such an idiot. Sitting at this front desk with bright red puffy eyes and I'm sniffling and I have to answer questions as if nothing is wrong.
It's none of anybody's business anyway. There's nothing wrong with feeling emotional. People here understand how hard it is especially trying to put a mask on. It sucks. I wish you can have a much easier time after this ordeal. It's just another passing moment you'll soon forget.

Just been told by another customer theyre gonna make an official complaint about me. Why have I not killed myself yet.
That brings back some awful memories. I worked as a cashier years ago and the receipt had a “customer survey” which was basically just a way for people to complain, insult, and try to get the low wage workers who tried their best to help them. Fuck these people.

Another thing. I would tell my doctor, therapist family members how absolutely horrible this was making me feel, how much it was worsening my depression and anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The solution to people treating me like garbage was to take medication, do stupid relaxation techniques so I could accept the abuse because “that’s just the way things are”.

They’ll also helpfully point out that some other people (especially in poorer countries) have even worse jobs than yours. As if that should make you happy...
