My doctor told me the medicine works for my condition as well as most others they don't know how or why it just does and I was cured of OCD anyway. I know we are all different and it doesn't work for everyone. I was also told there are billions of neurons in the human body and once medical science learns how to control them they will make mental illness a history.

PTSD is not controlled by medications but by counseling but the patient has to be willing to work together to get better and overcome it.

I once saw an episode on TV where one lady said her life before the traumatic event was still waters of a lake than someone threw a rock in it and caused ripples. The other lady said with time the ripples become still waters again. To this she replied but the rock is still there.
I'm glad medication helped you with OCD, out of curiosity, what was the drug you took? Was it an atypical AD? I heard some people have great success with Mirtazapine, but it made me exhausted and sleepy.

Sadly 10+ years of counseling hasn't done shit for me, I tried very hard to improve with my flashbacks and fear but therapy was pretty much useless in my case. I need medication to quell the fight or flight response, and they just kept giving me SSRI after SSRI and SNRI, hoping it would stick.

My sexual urges are also permanently damaged due to ptsd, no amount of exposure therapy, CBT, mindfulness, breathing exercises hypnosis, focusing on bodily sensations, etc helped in my situation. I have pretty much thrown in the towel when it comes to trying to get help for ptsd because I will just spend a ton of money on more talking therapies that don't get rid the symapthetic nervous system responses going on in my brain. I tried psychedelics too and that was a bust.

I really need a medication or physical treatment to help because I have had ptsd since I was 6 years old. I have heard of the stellate ganglion block but it's too expensive for me to pursue. I chose my degree because I would like to research treatments for ptsd and come up with something tangible since I have known many others who were failed by therapists and psychiatrists who blamed them for "not trying hard enough."

I have physical health problems like you though, and I agree it makes my mental state worse. Cannot accomplish anything I want because of IBS and chronic pain. When I am not constantly in pain, my mood is better.

I'm going to go the diet route to help with IBS like most have suggested scd diet online it will mean cooking my meals instead of processed stuff. The IBS causes inflammation of the gut where there are neurons and this affects my mental health it's a vicious cycle and I'm getting the book by Elaine Gotschell aptly titled breaking the vicious cycle.

I have to heal my body first and my mind will follow.

I don't have PTSD so can't advise.

I overcame OCD both by venlaflaxine and not engaging in the cumpulsive behaviour to eleviate the anxiety. This took time but I forced myself into touching stuff and not washing my hands despite my anxiety. When you ignore the anxiety it loses its power over you but if you feed it it gains more power.

I was a regular hand washer OCD until I spent my whole day washing my hands until the skin cracked.

I'm no longer on venlaflaxine.

I don't know if psychiatry is fake. The only thing that works for me is my sleeping pills.
Still, what I think doesn't work at all is therapy. Have had lots of therapists and none of them truly understands me or help me to move on.

I think psychiatry is real-ish and has potential to become better but right now I think a lot of it is in the wing it phase, if meds/therapy work they work if they don't then try different meds/therapy and so on... as someone said above it's kind of a pseudo science in that it doesn't work for everyone but it does work for some, this tells me they just need more knowledge of peoples brains on an individualistic level.

That said I'm no doctor and I'm too anxious to speak to one so I'm just speaking out of anecdotal stories I've heard.

1-Using hardscience or philosophical terminology without a glossary (Sorry, for anyone who google the words). Next i'll add one to follow better my reasoning.
2-Before, when i said mental illness doesn't exist, I should saying that mental illness are not real as physical illness, Doesn't mean that suffering in the patient does not exist. What should add in my last post is that "Mental illness" are actually living problems or undesirable form lifestyle. Psychiatry diagnosis are used for explain behavior and not to test real illness, Mostly undesirable behavior for giving example Drapetomia (an uncontrollable or insane impulsion to escape from being a slave) in 19th century was the "normal", Now is unacceptable pseudoscience because the global normalization of natural/human rights.
3-I don't know much about psychopharmacology, but changing the neuroendocrine or neurochemical structure to induced a specific cognitive change (Memory,Mood,Attention,etc). Reinforces my idea you can't cure undesirable behavior, Only control it.

Regarding point 3 there’s a neurochemical/neurobiological change that affects the machinery’s mechanisms causing things to run more smoothly, inhibiting certain feelings >> behaviors and inducing others. This happens via pharmaceuticals by manipulating neurotransmitter absorption in SSRI/SNRI. Exercise and diet act as catalysts to help speed up these internal physical changes that occur over time and lead to different behaviors. There’s no magic pill that offers dependency without effort or drawbacks to change lifelong ingrained patterns and rewire our neural pathways. This constantly happens btw even later in life as we learn and adapt to our environment due to brain plasticity. The difference about late life learning is we only encode for a new memory when it deviates from the expectation of our subconscious. As expectations solidify through life experience they can also be self fulfilling and it’s easy to see why scientifically.

When the highway of billions of neural pathways created through our life work in harmony the body tends to follow. Many things can influence this change, sometimes permanently. Drugs/medication are one that can. So is meditation. Which brings us back to your 2nd point (that had a couple valid clarifications)... mental illness is inherently connected to physical anatomy in the brain, neurobiological reactions and therefore disease.

We could argue semantics but a maladaptive way living/surviving that causes suffering for the person experiencing it, particularly to the extent they seek outside help in solving the problem seems like illness to me

Psychiatry is disgusting and does infinitely more harm than good. While I’m not sure as to whether brain inflammation is the cause of all mental illness, encephalitis was 100% the cause of mine. It took a whopping 18 years for me to get a proper diagnosis though, because nobody entertained the idea that my behavioral problems could’ve had its roots in the physical.
I am struggling to get docs to believe i have encephalitis !! I do,,.I know I do

It's neither one way or another. Having negative thought patterns is bad and therapy can help to learn different ways to think. That being said, if you've tried to think your way out of a mental issue and can't, then you know medicine is quite necessary for any chance of change. Even look at examples of people self-medicating. They do it for a reason.
